Crocodile Spirit is a painting inspired by 18th century idol carvings by the people of Papua New Guinea, in the southwestern Pacific region. Along the Sepik river in northern Papua New Guinea is the area known for a regional belief system which worship spirits manifesting as animals. Carvings of pigs and tropical birds to snakes and eagles are crafted by the native artisans, but it is the crocodile that truly resembles power along the Sepik. In one of the world's most extreme and brutal initiation ceremonies, the men of the Sepik have their backs, shoulders, and upper torsos sliced by razor blades to leave long raised welts resembling a crocodile's hide.
